(My undergrad and graduate degrees were in social work...and then I studied educational psychology...and then special education--I can relate to the struggle to find the right fit for oneself!) You might enjoy focusing on areas such as policy or program evaluation. If you’re interested in social work, there are other roles to be had besides the “touchy-feely” ones. I'd rather go to the dentist than have my hair cut. I don't even know this person, and they act like I have to spill my guts about everything - they're hair stylists, not psychiatrists, for goodness sake!!! Just perform the service I'm paying you for and leave it at that! What you said about your internal dialog is exactly the reason it bothers me - all that superficial yakking is interrupting my internal dialog, and constantly being interrupted is so frustrating. And Jim, maybe learn some ways to pick up on how receptive your fare is - - if this one doesn't want to talk, chances are the next one will.
